About CBD
SCIENCE BEHIND CBD
Research into CBD is constantly evolving, and there is no shortage of scientific papers promoting the benefits of a balanced and healthy ECS (endocannabinoid system). Studies into other cannabinoids have also started to show promising results, meaning it’s not just CBD (cannabinoid) that could be beneficial, but a full spectrum of compounds all found naturally within the cannabis plant.
CBD is just one of over 85 cannabinoids identified in the cannabis plant.
Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body in all mammals: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks, but the goal is always the same: homeostasis, the maintenance of a stable internal environment despite fluctuations in the external environment.
WHAT IS THE ECS?
CBD interacts with the body through the ECS, which is is made up of millions of cannabinoid receptor sites located primarily throughout the brain and central nervous system (CB1 receptors) and immune system (CB2 receptors) that act in neural communication. In a nutshell, your ECS is responsible for making sure your entire body is working optimally.
First discovered in the late 1980s, the ECS regulates the body’s homeostasis, or general state of balance, impacting such functions as;
- Sleep
- Appetite
- Pain
- Pleasure
- Energy Metabolism
- Cognition
- Memory
- Visceral sensation
- Mood
- Growth
- Movement
- Circulation
- Organ function
- Immune function
Homeostasis is a key element in the biology of all living things. It is best described as the ability to maintain stable internal conditions that are necessary for survival. Disease is a result of failing to achieve homeostasis.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THC AND CBD
Marijuana contains both THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), but the compounds have different effects.
THC is associated with the mind-altering effects it produces (aka “high”) when the compound is broken down by heat and introduced into the body – for example when someone smokes parts of the plant or adds those to food that is cooked.
CBD has none of the mind altering affects associated with recreational use of marijuana – it is not psychoactive. This means that it does not change the state of mind of the person who uses it. However, it has been observed that CBD produces significant changes in the body that have been found to have health benefits. CBD won’t get you “high” but will help relax your body and mind.
The feeling induced by CBD is a sense of relaxation coming over you. Any tension in your body will subside and your mind-chatter will slow. However, your focus will remain and you will be able to continue with your daily tasks unimpeded. This makes it ideal for daytime use, when consuming high amounts of THC may hinder you.
Most CBD used today is extracted from hemp – the least processed form of the cannabis plant.
Both hemp and marijuana belong to the same plant family, cannabis sativa, but they are very different in their properties:
Hemp is a fast-growing, low-impact crop that thrives on farms around the world, and has been used since at least 8,000BC to make clothes, feed people and much more. Environmentally friendly, sustainable and perfect for organic farming, hemp is now a popular crop in the UK – hemp is frost tolerant, requires only moderate amounts of water, and requires no pesticides or herbicides, and only moderate amounts of fertiliser.
It’s important to know that hemp is not ‘marijuana’. Marijuana is a single species within the wider Cannabis Sativa family that has been artificially hybridised and cultivated. This means that hemp is genetically distinct from marijuana, and the kinds of hemp that are used for our CBD are legal to grow, and the products we sell do not contain the intoxicating compounds present in marijuana.
DIFFERENT FORMS OF CBD
CBD comes in many forms, each with a different concentration of CBD
The first step is choosing your route of administration – in other words, choosing the best way to take CBD oil for your specific needs and lifestyle.
These include…
INGESTIBLE
- Liquid hemp oil, like CBD tinctures or CBD drops
- CBD concentrated into a thick paste
- Encapsulated CBD oil
- Cannabinoid-rich sprays/spritzers (generally designed for application beneath the tongue)
- Bottled water, drinks, coffee, tea
- CBD-infused chewing gum
- On-the-go dissolvable powders containing CBD (oftentimes blended with other adaptogenic herbs)
- Cooking oils (such as coconut oil or olive oil) with added cannabinoids
- CBD-infused edibles (i.e., gummies, brownies, cookies, chocolates etc.; generally for individuals who are sensitive to smoking/vaping)
SMOKABLE:
- Crystalline isolate shatter
- Wax crumble
- CBD e-liquids and vape cartridges (similar to an e-cigarette)
- TOPICALS:
- Transdermal patches with CBD (similar to a nicotine patch)
- CBD-infused salves, balms, lotions, shampoos, or soaps (for topical use)
- Bath bombs & bath salts infused with CBD
DECIDE HOW TO USE CBD OIL
LIQUID CBD OIL/TINCTURES/EXTRACTS
Drops or tinctures should have a “suggested serving size” and the total milligrams of CBD listed on their packaging. From there, you can determine the amount of CBD you would like to ingest. Simply place the correct quantity of drops under your tongue using the dropper and hold the CBD oil in place for a minimum of 60 seconds. The 60 second hold allows for absorption via the blood vessels underneath your tongue – efficiently bypassing first-pass metabolism. Once 60 seconds has passed, swallow the CBD oil.
CBD E-LIQUID/VAPE CARTRIDGES
Vaping is ideal for people looking for an immediate response, as inhalation is the fastest way to deliver CBDs to your brain and body. To use vape, simply inhale through the mouthpiece slowly for 3 seconds. Then fill your lungs the rest of the way with additional breath and hold for a few seconds, exhaling when ready. There are cost-effective pre-filled CBD vape pens and cartridges available as well as more expensive vaporizers that you can refill with CBD-infused e-liquid.
CBD EDIBLES
This one is pretty self-explanatory. We all know how to eat. CBD edibles come in various form such as gummies sweets, chocolates, granola bars, cookies, drinks, coffee, tea etc. Just read the instructions for recommended dosage.
CBD ISOLATES/CONCENTRATES
Anyone familiar with smoking hash or other cannabis concentrates like wax and BHO will be no stranger to this delivery method. Simply sprinkle some into a vaporizer or water pipe, ignite, inhale, and enjoy! We find that this option is useful for individuals looking to elevate their regular consumption of CBD-rich hemp flowers or other smokable herbs.
HOW MUCH CBD SHOULD I TAKE
There are many variables such as weight, diet, metabolism, genetics, environment etc, that make it literally impossible to make a universal dosage.
It is only possible to give a rough estimate for an individual.
Bearing these factors in mind, if you are trying CBD for the first time, it would be most sensible to begin with the minimal CBD dosage suggested on any product label, then gradually increasing the dose until you have achieve the desired results.
As a guide to the ideal dosage, try 25mg of CBD, taken twice daily. You can increase the amount of CBD you take every 3-4 weeks by 25mg until you gain symptom relief (conversely, decrease by 25mg if symptoms worsen). However, we do not make any medical claims or give out any medical advice, and advise you to consult a doctor.
Mayo Clinic suggests CBD dosages based on scientific research, publications, traditional use, and expert opinion. Cannabinoid dosages and duration of treatment depend mainly on the illness (and countless other factors).
The following chart from Mayo Clinic provides specific dosage recommendations for various illnesses:
- Chronic Pain: 2.5-20mg of CBD [with or without THC] (orally)
- Epilepsy: 200-300mg of CBD (orally) daily.
- Mobility issues due to Huntington’s Disease: 10mg of CBD per kg of body weight daily for six weeks (orally).
- Sleep Disorders: 40mg-160mg of CBD (orally).
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS) symptoms: Cannabis plant extracts containing 2.5-120 milligrams of a THC/CBD combination daily for 2-15 weeks. Patients typically use eight sprays within any three hours, with a maximum of 48 sprays in any 24-hour period.
- Schizophrenia: 40-1,280mg oral CBD daily.
- Glaucoma: A single sublingual CBD dosage of 20-40mg (>40 mg may increase eye pressure).
The following is a list of illnesses/conditions that whose symptoms may be relieved by CBD
- Pain (neuropathic, chronic etc)
- Epilepsy
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
- Parkinson’s
- Inflammation
- Acne
- Dyskinesia
- Psoriasis
- Broken Bones
- Depression
- Bacterial Infections
- Diabetes
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Nausea
- Anxiety
- ADHD
- Schizophrenia
- Substance Abuse/Withdrawal
- Heart Disease
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
YOU CANNOT OVERDOSE ON CBD
There is no established lethal dose of CBD, and chronic use/high doses of up to 1500 mg per day (30x MORE than the COR Serving Standard!) have been repeatedly shown to be well tolerated by humans.
As with any natural product, it is important to speak with your physician prior to beginning use. BENEFITS OF CBD
SLEEP BETTER
Because CBD can have calming effects, sleeping longer and having better quality sleep is likely to occur. Due to the calming effects, CBD can also combat the effects of insomnia. All of these together can help you reach deep, R.E.M. sleep!
FULL OF ANTIOXIDANTS
Antioxidants are important! They stop free radicals from damaging cells in our bodies, they keep our immune systems strong and can even slow the stages of pre-mature aging in our skin.
YOU WON’T GET HIGH
What many people get wrong about CBD is that they think it has the same effects as THC. This is incorrect. THC, which is found in marijuana is responsible for the psychoactive effects such as euphoria, anxiety, and short-term memory loss. CBD is found mostly in hemp, and contains less than .3% of THC, which is not enough to cause psychoactive effects.
EASE ANXIETY & STRESS
When CBD is in the body, it reacts with the part of the brain that releases serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical that more or less regulates your mood, and having low levels has been shown to cause depression and anxiety. So when CBD is ingested, it acts to trigger more serotonin, which can alleviate depression and anxiety.
MANY WAYS TO INGEST CBD
There are many ways to get CBD into our bodies. Some of the ways include using topical creams, CBD tinctures, and ingesting CBD oils. Also, many beverages now include CBD! With so many options, getting CBD is easier than ever..
